Hot Cares and Jet Ubunye transform lives at St Mary’s Children’s Home

What started on Mandela Day grew into months of support, ending with a magical Christmas party that left the children feeling valued and full of festive cheer.

Christmas came early for the children of St Mary’s Children’s Home when HOT 102.7 FM, Hot Cares and Jet Ubunye teamed up to host an unforgettable Christmas party for the children and staff.

According to HOT 102.7 FM and Hot Cares, giving back is central to their mission.

Bunny Majaja chats with the Jet Ubunye team about the day’s impact.

“This is just one of the many community events we get involved in every year that not only puts smiles on the faces of the people we visit, but also on all of us involved,” the team said. “This organisation does such fantastic work, and the least we can do is bring some joy at Christmas time and support those who need it most.”

The Christmas party was filled with excitement. The children enjoyed gingerbread-house making, pizza making, board games and basketball, and each child received a special Christmas gift. Jet Ubunye generously sponsored the gifts and helped run the day’s activities.

The Jet team shared their pride in being involved: “Seeing the children so happy reminds us why these partnerships matter. We feel honoured to play a part in making their day special.”

But the impact of this partnership goes far beyond one Christmas celebration.

Hot Cares and Jet Ubunye also spent Mandela Day at St Mary’s, making major improvements to the home. Their teams donated new linen, painted a bright and colourful mural, upgraded the basketball court, assisted with solar support and installed JoJo tanks to help the home save water.

Sonja Harmse, director of St Mary’s Children’s Home, said these acts of kindness have made a huge difference in the lives of the children.

“The children feel seen, valued and supported,” she said. “What Hot Cares and Jet did on Mandela Day, and continued to do long after, has brought real change to our home. It has given our children pride in their space and reminded them that there are people out there who truly care.” She praised the ongoing support that stretched beyond Mandela Day and into the festive season.
