WATCH: Eden Park woman to celebrate Christmas again after 2 years of blindness
After repeated public hospital visits and worsening cataracts, Bettie Kamfer’s life changed when organisations and medical professionals stepped in to help.
For two years, 65-year-old Bettie Kamfer from Eden Park lived in complete darkness after losing her eyesight due to cataracts.
This Christmas, she will be able to see again after a life-changing surgery made possible through the support of her neighbour and several organisations.
Bettie’s vision problems began when she was diagnosed with cataracts.
She repeatedly visited Thelle Mogoerane Hospital, but each time she was told that the necessary equipment was not working.
As time passed, her condition worsened, and she eventually became completely blind.
Losing her independence was one of the most painful aspects of her blindness.
Once able to care for herself, Bettie became reliant on her husband and son for daily needs, including bathing and being assisted to the bathroom.
Her neighbour, Mercia Scheepers of the Predistined2Help organisation, said Bettie often shared how difficult life had become.
“She was used to doing everything on her own, and it hurt her to depend on her family for everything,” she said.
The situation reached a critical point when Bettie told Scheepers that she could no longer cope with living without sight.
Scheepers said the conversation deeply affected her.
“That same day, I couldn’t sleep. I was crying and asking God to make a plan.
“I contacted SALICT on that day because I knew I had to do something,” she said.

The Life Improvement Charitable Trust (SALICT) agreed to assist and began reaching out to sponsors.
Doctors later came forward and offered to perform the surgery at a private hospital.
Kamfer said she was overwhelmed when she was informed that the surgery would take place within two weeks.
“I couldn’t believe it. I was so excited and couldn’t wait for the operation,” she said.
According to Kamfer, doctors explained that it is uncommon for someone of her age to undergo surgery on both eyes at the same time, but they were confident the procedures would be successful.
She underwent two surgeries and regained her eyesight.
Now able to see again, Kamfer is looking forward to celebrating Christmas with full vision for the first time in two years, spending time with her family, and enjoying everyday moments she once feared she had lost forever.
She also gives thanks to God for this miracle that has restored her sight and hope.
In addition, the Predistined2Help organisation will be providing Kamfer with spectacles in early January 2026, as recommended by her doctors, to support her recovery and ensure she maintains optimal vision.
Kamfer added, “I hope that my story touches someone out there and reminds them that in every situation they are in, God is seeing them and will make a plan.”
