Pikitup warns: Jobs are free, scams are costly

City of Joburg waste entity urges public to beware of scams demanding payments for jobs and to report suspicious activity to SAPS.

Pikitup, the City of Johannesburg’s waste management entity, is warning job seekers that its vacancies are not for sale.

This follows recent reports of individuals being scammed by people posing as Pikitup employees, offering general worker positions in exchange for payments of R500 or more.

Pikitup spokesperson, Anthony Selepe, said the entity strongly condemns these fraudulent activities and urges the public to remain vigilant. Under no circumstances should anyone pay money to secure a job opportunity.

“The scammers are reportedly using content from a legitimate job advertisement published in February this year, where Pikitup advertised general worker positions, to mislead unsuspecting applicants and solicit payment,” said Selepe.

Pikitup reiterates that it does not charge any fees for job applications or appointments. Members of the public are strongly advised not to make any payments in exchange for employment.

Those unsure about the legitimacy of a job offer are encouraged to verify the information by contacting Pikitup’s call centre on 010 055 5990 or 087 357 1068.

The entity also urges anyone who may have fallen victim to this scam to report the matter and open a case with the SAPS.
