Community members gathered on August 23 to honour the memory of whistleblower Babita Deokaran on the fifth anniversary of her assassination.

The commemoration began at the assassination site on Dungavan Avenue / Seder Street, off Columbine Avenue in Joburg South.

Family, friends and activists laid flowers, lit candles and held prayers in her memory.

Attendees held a picket on Columbine Avenue to stand against corruption and show solidarity with whistleblowers.

The morning concluded with a public remembrance where speakers reflected on Deokaran’s life, her courage in exposing corruption, and the ongoing fight for accountability and protection for whistleblowers in South Africa.

Residents who attended the event said it served as a solemn reminder of the price of speaking out against corruption and the importance of continuing to honour Babita Deokaran’s legacy.

Minister of Police Feroz Cachalia spoke about the impact Deokaran’s sacrifice has had on the South African government’s efforts to combat corruption.

“Babita Deokaran was a heroine who stood up against corruption in the health sector. She stood up for vulnerable citizens who deserved healthcare. She stood up for taxpayers who are paying to keep the country going. The South African Police Service is focused on uncovering every detail that can lead us to those who organised her assassination,” said Cachalia.

Deokaran’s brother, Rakesh Deokaran, also delivered an emotional tribute to his sister.

“As a family, we miss her a lot. She was truly an amazing person. We want to thank all those who continue her work and her fight against corruption. She would be honoured. We will also never stop seeking justice for her,” said Rakesh.
