“There are two questions that we have to ask ourselves. The first is ‘Where am I going?’ and the second is ‘Who will go with me?’ If you ever get these questions in the wrong order, you are in trouble.” – Howard Thurman
Purpose gives your life a meaning. It helps you focus on what matters most and ignore distractions. If you don’t have a clear purpose, it’s so easy to be taken advantage of and get side-tracked by things that don’t add any value to your life. When you have a clear purpose, you value your time more, ignore time-wasters, take full responsibility for your life, accept hardships of life and are driven by the excitement of the person you are becoming.
Your purpose is to use your gifts and talents to make this world a better place. When I ask most people what their purpose is, they say “To help people”. Whether it’s the homeless, elderly, etc, but it’s helping people. The main question is how will you accomplish that purpose of helping people?
The highest form of living your purpose is using your own gifts and talents to raise money in order to fulfil your purpose – relying on yourself. The way you find your gifts and talents is by studying yourself, observing your passions and strengths – those things you like and do so well. Socrates, one of the greatest philosophers, said: “Know thyself”. That’s what he meant. Studying yourself is a long-term process. A normal university degree takes about three to four years of serious studying – tests, assignments, researches and examinations. However difficult and challenging the process, you have to stick it out. This, I’ve found to be the same with finding your gifts and talents, it’s a process that’s full of challenges.
