Attention is our trading currency for success
The average attention span of a human less than attention span of a goldfish.
The information is now so freely available. You can easily get information from books, Google, conferences, seminars, workshops, and coaching sessions. This information can be acquired at the tap of your finger.
The challenge, however, is when this information has to be converted into knowledge, skill, and mastery. This process requires focused attention, discipline, sacrifice, patience, resolve, and resilience, which are all demanding of a person.
These are not as easily available as the information. They require one to be intentional about developing them and it is not easy. We are in this attention economy that Hebert Si
mon, the economist and futurist, had predicted in the 1970s about the 21st Century which is where we are now.
Simon predicted the 21st Century would be known as the attention economy because those who would make it will be the ones who will pay focused attention to develop depth in their fields. The many things vying for our attention lead to a distractible mind that cannot stay focused for very long.
Now in 2024, it is reported that the average attention span of a human is only 8.25 seconds, which is less than the 9-second attention span of a goldfish.
Attention span, the length of time a person can concentrate on a single task, activity, or stimulus, is a crucial aspect of cognitive functioning. It influences how we learn, work, and interact with our surroundings.
Attention is our new trading currency in developing skills and mastery. Without it, we will forever be chasing fleeting things around us. Many people are swimming in dire poverty when it comes to this currency.
Until you develop this currency, you can kiss your greatness and dreams goodbye.
