Residents evicted from their homes

Residents claim that they are unlawfully evicted as some of their possessions spent the whole day and night on the street.

TURFFONTEIN – Families were left homeless on Tuesday November 19, after being forcefully removed at about 07:00 from their homes at Turffontien in De Villiers Street.

Children came back from school to find that their parents, and possessions, were outside on the side of the street.

An anonymous resident, who has been residing in the house for the past seven years, said that the person responsible for their eviction has been attempting to move them out of the house since last year.

He believes that it is unlawful that they must be evicted during this period of the month, because they need to be paid before they can find a new place. He added that there is no legitimacy or honesty in the eviction and they are taking the matter to court.

Alan Jackson, the person responsible for the eviction, said that the house is an inheritance and the rightful owner is deceased. He noted that at this moment, he is the co-owner of the house – the second co-owner remains anonymous, up until the renovations are complete and that is when his client (the person to inherit the house) will then reside in the house. He said that the eviction period takes up to a year and the people staying in the house were given enough time to move out.
