I would like to bring to your attention an accident that happened yesterday (Sunday December 7) in the South at about 7:30.

I was cycling down Rifle Range Road in the direction of Southgate and approaching the intersection of Klipriver Drive Road. The robot was green, giving me right of way. As I was about to cross the pedestrian crossing a Chubb Security vehicle coming from the opposite direction turned in front of me and stopped. I realised there were two options, either I rode into the vehicle or avoid it by trying to turn left down Klipriver Road, which I did, and because the road is uneven and the pavement nearby, the bicycle skidded and I slid on my left on the tarmac bruising my body and sustaining some open wounds.

While lying in pain on the side of the pavement I looked towards the intersection and saw the Chubb vehicle still standing at the intersection for a minute or three. Then it drove off and as it passed me the driver just looked ahead without showing any concern. As he passed me I memorised his registration DR07MSGP. A gentleman who wore an orange T-shirt who was standing opposite the road when the accident happened came to my aid and a woman in a white bakkie who drove past me decided to reverse and they both asked if I was okay.

The lady asked me who she could call and I gave her my partner’s number. She called my partner and informed her that she will take me home with my bicycle. The lady who also took a cloth from her vehicle and bandaged my bleeding elbow. I just wanted to go to the police station, but they told me to go home and then go later to the police station and hospital. I want to thank the persons who came to my aid and request Chubb to look seriously into this matter. My request to motorists is to show respect for a cyclist like they have for the guys pulling trolleys with paper and plastics on the roads.
