PLEASE keep your pets safe by ensuring your gates are closed and locked at all times. There are a lot of homeless people desperate for money and they steal pets and sit with the animals where they know passers-by will stop and buy the stolen pets.
This happened to me on Monday afternoon. On my way home from work, I saw a boerboel sitting with six men on the corner of Harry and Altham streets in Robertsham and I stopped. I asked them whose dog it was and one of the men said it belonged to a man who was moving house (pointing towards Ridgeway) and said the man gave it to him but he has to sell it as he does not have a job.
I immediately asked two of the men to put the dog in my car and took him to my vet to see if he had a chip to find his owners but he didn’t have a chip.
Yesterday when I stopped at the same corner after work, there were about eight men and I asked the same guys to tell me where they found the dog and they pointed towards the highway this time.
I asked if they could show me the house from where they got the dog, they said yes and I followed them and they walked around the corner into Kimberley Road and pointed towards the veld opposite the homes.
Their story then changed to two men who had reportedly stopped in the veld and dropped off two dogs as they no longer wanted the dogs, the one dog ran away and they took the boerboel.
The public needs to be aware of what is happening out there and we need to be vigilant and look out for our fellow animals.
