Schools canoe league
U.18 medal winners at the recent event included Jaco Pieterse from Hoerskool Florida in Roodepoort, and Christopher Sam from Forest Town, Turffontein who is a member of the Johannesburg Canoe Club based at Wemmer Pan.
East Rand kayak club hosted a 21km Winter race on Saturday June 29 as well as a junior School League race, with gracious sponsorship from the Ekurhuleni Municipality – T-shirts, warm thermal tops, warm food and cold drinks were provided to all entries; which numbered over 100 despite the chilly wind and choppy water.
Gauteng’s canoe union School league consists of juniors from u.8 through to u.18 who participate in races at various lakes and dams throughout Gauteng, attracting paddlers from as far as Rustenburg, Secunda, Lowveld, Pretoria, Parys and the Johannesburg surrounds.
Points are allocated to the individuals on a sliding scale from first finisher to last finisher for completing the race, and the accumulated points are credited to the school represented at the end of each year.
