The quarter finals of the Telkom Knockout Cup will take place over the weekend.
The much coveted trophy will have eight teams fighting it out to advance to book their place in the semi finals.
Mamelodi Sundowns will be eager to end their poor recent record against Platinum Stars when they face the MTN8 champions in a Telkom Knockout quarterfinal clash at the Moruleng stadium near Rustenburg on Saturday evening, kick-off at 19:00.
The two teams booked their place in the last eight of the competition with first round wins over Maritzburg United and Bloemfontein Celtic respectively.
Stars beat Maritzburg 2-0 on home soil while ‘Downs thumped the outgoing champions Siwelele 4-0 away from home.
“We are very confident, we are doing well this season and we hope to continue doing well,” said Platinum Stars midfielder Patrick Malokase .“We are taking it one game at a time, we will give it our best shot.
“Coming into to the game, it’s going to be difficult” said Mamelodi Sundowns striker Katlego Mashego.“We are playing away and they [Platinum Stars] are on cloud nine at the moment [having won the MTN8]. For them now everything is possible, they have the proof
The Brazilians have twice reached the final in the Telkom Knockout era (2007/08 and 2012/13), but failed to claim the trophy on either occasion.
Dikwena’s best showing in the Telkom Knockout era is winning the tournament in 2006. Since then, however, they have only once progressed beyond the last 16.
The first matches kick off on Saturday, October 19 with SuperSport United hosting Moroka Swallows in Lucas Moripe Stadium and Mamelodi Sundowns travelling to Rustenburg to play against Platinum Stars. Orlando Pirates will close the last eight on Wednesday, October 23 against Golden Arrows at the Orlando Stadium.
