It’s derby time between Alberton and Union

Local derby time this coming Friday and Saturday.

DERBY time has once again arrived between the two near-neighbour rugby clubs, Union Bulldogs and A-Square Forklift Alberton.

The two rivals will meet each other in the third round of the Pirates Grand Challenge league which will be played at Alberton home grounds on the weekend of April 22 and 23.

The local derby will also incorporate the game between Xerox Golden Lions and Blue Bulls. The weekend will kick off on Friday evening with the two clubs’ u.20, u.21, third and second teams. Kick-off times are u.20 and u.21 at 18:15 on the B-fields, third teams at 19:40 on the A-field and the second teams at 21:00 on the A-field.

The match of the day on Saturday will be Xerox Golden Lions and Blue Bulls with kick-off time at 15:00. This will be followed by the local derby clash at 17:15 between Union Bulldogs and A-Square Forklift Alberton.

Caxton South is the media partner on the day and will host the much coveted Currie Cup that anyone can have his or her photo taken with.

“This is a very good opportunity for the clubs to grow and showcase their talent when the Provincial Cup comes to local clubs,” said chairman of Union Bulldogs, Hennie Welgemoed, “Clubs will also fill up with their supporters at the one side and on the other to watch provincial rugby.”

“Obviously Union is rebuilding its club, after we have moved to new premises and lost a lot of players, but then some of our players are returning and we had many players joining the club. This will be a tough challenge against Alberton, but we are ready and this is always a good game of rugby.”

“We urge supporters to come out and not only support their provincial team, but their local team. We are going to give Alberton a go,” he said.

In the meantime Union Bulldogs have not had a healthy start to the season, going down to Wanderers in their first matches and playing against the victorious NWU Pukke side last weekend on Friday, April 15.

Union Bulldogs club plays from the Klipriverberg Recreation Centre, Peggy Vera Road, Kibler Park. Two fully equipped A- and B-fields. Practice takes place on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 18:00 to 20:00. Junior rugby training for six years and over will take place on Wednesdays from 18:00 to 20:00 and on Saturdays from 09:00 to 11:00.
