Pink Day at Wanderers

The Pink, One Day International, ODI, will be celebrating five years on February 4.

THE Pink One Day International will be celebrating five years and the organisers are calling on all cricket fans to dress in pink in aid of breast cancer awareness

Standard Bank Proteas will be dressed in pink for the third Momentum ODI against Sri Lanka on Saturday, February 4, at Bidvest Wanderers Stadium. The match will be a celebration of five years of supporting PinkDrive, South Africa’s premier breast cancer community carer.

PinkDrive is an organisation committed to improving breast cancer education and awareness. It prides itself on providing preventative screening services to women (and men) across South Africa.

Bidvest, Momentum, and Cricket South Africa (CSA) have issued an invitation to all the fans attending the third ODI to dress in pink in support of breast cancer awareness.

As in the last four years, a capacity crowd is expected to turn up at one of the most iconic annual cricketing events in the world.

“We haven’t lost the previous four, but this is cricket and hopefully we can pull it through,” said Farhaan Behardien.

“This is always a special day to play and I am definitely looking forward to making my return to the side,” said AB de Villiers, who returned to the third T20 Proteas match against Sri Lanka and who will also be in action in the ODI.

Fans can also show their support by donating R20, by sending an SMS to 40158 with the keyword “Cricket” (Ts and Cs apply).

“The annual Pink Day ODI featured at the Bidvest Wanderers stadium is a big occasion for us,” said CSA chief executive, Haroon Lorgat. “With the risk of breast cancer and its high impact on a family, we are proud of our support in raising awareness and mobilising cricket fans through the PinkDrive campaign.

“PinkDrive is one of our foremost social programmes and proves how sport can play a broader role in society.

“I would especially like to thank the Boards of Pakistan, India, the West Indies, England and now Sri Lanka whose players and team management have wholeheartedly supported the spirit of our Pink Day ODIs. This is truly what sport can do.”
