Cup stays in Alberton

It was an extremely tough battle, with each side's goal shooters missing two long-range penalties in the first half. This ultimately ended up with no team scoring at the break.

THE much-coveted Kevin de Klerk Cup has found a home at A-Square Forklift Alberton Rugby Club for the past two years and this year it will be no different.

The Eland team from A-Square Forklift Alberton took on a well-coached and exciting Union Bulldogs first team on Friday evening, March 31, at Alberton and won the match 15-8 in the opening match of the Golden Lions Rugby Union Pirates Grand Challenge competition.

It was an extremely tough battle, with each side’s goal shooters missing two long-range penalties in the first half. This ultimately ended up with no team scoring at the break.

In the first half the home teams’ tight five dominated the opposition, creating many opportunities for the backs. However, the outside back failed to finish.

Fresh out of the change room, Alberton’s speedster, Thorn Khumalo, got possession of the ball in space and replicated what he did last season – going over the opposition’s try line without a finger being laid on him, to dot down for the home side’s first try.

As in the first half, the forwards got down to business and started bossing Union’s set phases, disrupting line-out as well as the scrums. This gave the backs plenty of opportunity to run with the ball.

Arno “Krappies “ Smit was on the end of a well-worked bit of play and went over in the corner, in front of the Eland team home crowd.

The third and final try came from a magnificent grubber from the boot of Theo Rhodes, behind the defensive line of the Bulldogs. Jacques van Wyk gathered and powered his way through the last line of defence to score.

Two Alberton debutants shared the Man Of the Match awards, Theo Rhodes from the backline and forward Stuart Austin.

Alberton will play their next match away against Jabulani, Soweto, on Saturday, April 22.

The other results are:

U.19 Alberton 50, Union 23

U.21 Alberton 48, Union 14

Third side Alberton 0, Union 27

Second side Alberton 34, Union 3

First side Alberton 15, Union 8
