Mamelodi Sundowns wins big
The Gauteng Sport Awards 2017 awarded took place over the weekend.
MAMELODI Sundowns won the most coveted Team of the Year award, raked in a second award when Hlompho Kekana was crowned Sport Personality of the Year while Pitso Mosimane took a third for his team winning Coach of the Year award.
The Gauteng Sport Awards took place on October 1 in Johannesburg where their top sport stars were awarded for their efforts during the season.
Lawrence Brittian of TUKS Rowing edged out stiff competition to claim the Sportman of the Year award while the Sportwoman of the Year award went to Tanita Ramburuth Hurt of Wits Sport.
Athlete Maria Combrink won the Sportwoman of the Year with a Disability and Wheelchair Tennis star Evans Maripa took home the Sportman of the Year with a Disability. The collective of athletes is Ability Sport Athletics Team which was voted Sport Team of the Year with a Disability.
Mdevas Mokubela of Kaizer Chiefs scooped the Sport Fan of the Year as voted for by the public.
Some 18 trophies were handed to deserving winners from different sporting codes. A record three Lifetime Achievement recipients were honoured Peter ‘Terror’ Mathebula, Selinah Metsing and Maurizio Mariano.
Faith Mazibuko, Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation said: “What happened tonight was truly spectacular. Gauteng, take a bow. I’m proud of how our achievers were honoured and the worthy winners celebrated. This is a special project of the department and we wish to see it grow in leaps and bounds in years to come. Congratulations to all who took awards home and to all who made tonight such a great success. We are proud of the production values of the show and the service providers who came to the party, who are mostly black women by the way. Till next year.”
