Liege cruises to Cup victory
Liege, with jockey Raymond Danielson, took full honours at this year’s Summer Cup.
THE Summer Cup was delayed for a full day due to persistent rainfall which made the Turffontein racetrack unsafe for both horses and jockeys and was moved from Saturday to Sunday afternoon.
The Summer Cup thus took place on November 26 instead of 25, but it still had all the vibe and excitement of the biggest horseracing day in the South of Johannesburg.
Sean Tarry’s Liege took full honours with jockey Raymond Danielson on his back to win big for the stable.
Liege took control of the race some 600m out and led the charge of the field 300m from the winning post. He beat Fort Ember and Coral Fever, who came in third, to scoop up the R2-million Grade 1 Summer Cup laurels.
“I’ve never ridden Liege in a race although I have worked him once or twice,” Danielson said. “He didn’t feel at home like he did today. I feel I rode the best horse in the race.”
Night racing will take place at Turffontein on December 5 and 12.
