Champions Day was delayed due to protest action
The group of about 50 protesters invaded Turffontein Racecourse after the running of Race Two.
Champions Day, which took place at Turffontein Racecourse on May 4, was delayed by an hour due to protest action by the stable grooms.
According to a statement issued by the organisers, the grooms were protesting against employment conditions. The group of about 50 protesters invaded Turffontein Racecourse after the running of Race Two. Race Three was rescheduled for 2pm.
“The group of about 50 people entered the track at the 400m mark. Racing officials engaged with the protesters and eventually persuaded them to leave the course so that racing could continue.
“Further amended race times were due to be announced.”
Champions Day continued and all the expected races took place during the day.
