Superb Spartans taste success at League 1 Karate Championships

The sensei and students look forward to future successes as a result of their consistent training and passion for the sport.

The Spartans Karate dojo featured eight athletes who attended the South African League 1 Championships in Bloemfontein.

The event was held at Temple Military Base, over the weekend of April 19.

Spartans Karate public relations officer Martine Venter said: “The competition was stiff, especially as it was away in Free State, and we had to battle against their hometown advantage.”

The dojo’s members formed part of the Gauteng provincial team and represented the province and the athletes performed extremely well, bringing back four gold, five silver, and six bronze medals.

Lerato Mohohlo won gold for kumite (fighting) in girls U42kg and placed fifth for kata in the 12/13 year girls’ divisions.

Jody Jansen competed in the U54kg girls kumite and team kumite event. She won silver and gold, respectively, and also placed fifth for kata in the 14/15 year girls’ divisions.

Aiden Arendse competed in the U55kg male kumite, team kata and team kumite events, where he won two bronze and a silver.

Juan-Drè Loots competed in the U75kg male kumite, open kumite and team kumite events, where he won two gold and a bronze.

Rochelle Seitz won silver for kumite in girls over 52kg and Dylan Venter won silver for kumite in boys U45kg.

Ewan Coerecius competed in the team kata and team kumite events, where he won bronze and silver, respectively, and placed fifth for U68kg male kumite division.

Abhay Harriparsad competed in the U61kg male kumite and team kata events, where he won bronze and bronze, respectively.

Gauteng Karate placed first in the country and came out on top. Sensei Enzo Pillay, who is the instructor of Spartans Karate, said they are looking forward to achieving success on the world stage soon.
