South Hills Boxing Club donates equipment to Soweto Club for Mandela Day

The club donated vital boxing equipment to Tladi Boxing Club, supporting young athletes and grassroots boxing in Soweto.

In the spirit of Mandela Day and Mandela Month, South Hills Boxing Club has donated essential boxing equipment to Tladi Boxing Club in Soweto, reinforcing its commitment to community development and the growth of amateur boxing.

Members of South Hills Boxing Club, led by head coach and chairman, coach Lyle Fortoen, dedicated 67 minutes of service in honour of the legacy of former President Nelson Mandela.

The donation is aimed at strengthening grassroots boxing and supporting the development of young athletes.

The equipment included boxing bags, focus pads, and protective head guards, which will help create a safer training environment and provide young boxers with the tools they need to improve their skills.

The donation was received by Edward ‘The Master’ Mogemi, head coach of Tladi Boxing Club and a former South African National Lightweight Champion.

Coach Mogemi, a long-time friend of South Hills Boxing Club, has made a significant contribution to developing boxing talent in the Soweto community.

Coach Lyle Fortoen said the initiative reflected the true meaning of Mandela Day.

“Mandela Day reminds us that true leadership is found in serving others. As boxing clubs, we are not competitors in developing our youth; we are partners. By supporting one another, we strengthen the future of boxing in South Africa and provide more opportunities for young people to succeed both inside and outside the ring,” he said.

The donation forms part of South Hills Boxing Club’s ongoing mission to use boxing as a tool for youth development, discipline, education and positive social change.

The club continues to invest in community outreach programmes and partnerships that empower young people through sport.

South Hills Boxing Club also thanked coach Edward Mogemi and the Tladi Boxing Club family for their warm hospitality and their continued commitment to developing future champions.

The club also encourages individuals, businesses and organisations to support local sports clubs and community initiatives that make a lasting difference in the lives of young people.
