Matriculants showcase their art

High school learners’ impressive artworks inspire purchase offers.

MONDEOR –  Mondeor High School’s grade 12 learners astonished attendees with the level of skill and talent displayed at the Mondeor High Retrospective Exhibition.

The artworks showcased form part of the practical assessment tasks (PAT) completed over the last three terms.

Art educator, Frick van der Linde, explained that 55 grade 12 learners are taking the subject this year and that some of their drawings and paintings already have purchase offers from interested buyers. The most outstanding artworks by grade 10 and 11 pupils were also featured in the exhibition.

“Moderators from the Gauteng Department of Education came in to check if the work was marked too strict or too lenient by myself. Some of the marks given were lifted and learners received a higher mark. The art is for sale if people want to buy from the learners,” said Van der Linde. the most outstanding artworks by grade 10 and 11 pupils were also featured.

Later in the year, the young artists will paint again and the marks will be quantified to make up their final year mark.

Visual arts lecturer in the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (Fada) at the University of Johannesburg, Shonisani Netshia, gave an opening talk at the exhibition. Netshia has been involved in a number of group and collaborative art projects and has facilitated workshops funded by the Goethe-Institut in Johannesburg.
