Church offerings stolen by gunmen

Armed robbers made off with R18,000 in tithes and offerings from a church in Montclair Road on Monday, 7 October.

Montclair SAP communications officer, Lt Leopold Jojozi said: “Two members of the church were on their way to deposit the money when two armed men attacked them in the parking lot at FNB in Mobeni. They pointed a gun at them and took a bag which contained the money before making off in a grey Mercedes Benz with an NU registration plate towards Durban. The men were wearing balaclavas.”

A member of the church, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: “Security needs to be consolidated by the branch for the sake of their clients, otherwise we will be too scared to go there. The incident shocked us and we are trying to cope with it.”

The same vehicle was spotted in Bellair and Malvern, committing a similar offence. No arrests have been made. Police are investigating further.
