Beachgoers to heed lifeguards warnings
A number of drownings have occurred in the past few weeks along the north and south coast of KZN, as well as inland at swimming pools.
Lifesaving KZN, the controlling body of surf and stillwater lifesaving clubs in the province has announced that voluntary lifesaving clubs are in full operation and ready for the influx of visitors.
Brighton Beach has both volunteers and professional lifeguards attending to the safety of beachgoers. Voluntary lifeguards perform duties on Sundays and public holidays. Ansteys Beach has only professional lifeguards serving the beach.
Both beaches will be open from 6am until 6.30pm throughout the festive season, and until 10pm on busy days. Metro Police will be on patrol at both beaches, with an additional SAP container satellite office at Brighton Beach. Child minders will be on duty at both beaches.
Beachgoers are reminded to swim between the red and yellow flags and to obey the instructions of lifeguards and law enforcement.
Important safety tips:
* Swim only in protected areas where lifeguards are on duty.
* Never swim at night.
* Do not drink alcohol and swim.
* Stay in shallow water if you are a weak swimmer.
* Obey lifeguard whistles and instructions.
* Only swim in proper bathing attire.
* Parents must look after their children at all times.
