Refuse backlog due to ‘mechanical malfunction’

Montwood residents are irked by the lack of efficient refuse collection in the area in the past few weeks.

Residents complained refuse in some roads is not collected and in roads where it is, it is piled up and left there. Montclair CPF chairman, Gavin Hegter said: “The issue has been going on for a number of weeks. I was informed there was a mechanical issue with the truck and street sweeping trucks were being used to try and remove the refuse, which could not handle the load.”

The municipality confirmed the issue was caused by mechanical malfunction. A dedicated truck was dispatched to the area on Friday, 24 January which cleared the backlog.

“It’s unfortunate the matter was not sorted out earlier as the issue has been going on for the past few weeks. As a result of refuse not being collected, some residents dumped their refuse in bushes and parks, perpetuating illegal dumping,” said Hegter.
