Armed business robber gets 20 years

W/O Rico Naidoo linked Mhlangeni to a similar offense at the same premises in March and another robbery in Chatsworth in July.

DURBAN Regional Court sentenced a 46-year-old man to 20 years’ imprisonment on Thursday, 11 December.

Funokwakhe Mhlangeni robbed a business premises in Maharaj Road, Clairwood on 13 September.
He held the business owner at gunpoint and robbed him of R35,000 cash, laptops and cellphones. Mhlangeni fled in a Toyota Tazz.
The business owner gave chase on foot and informed a passing police patrol. Police gave chase and arrested the thief. Police recovered the stolen goods and an unlicensed firearm. W/O Rico Naidoo linked Mhlangeni to a similar offense at the same premises in March and another robbery in Chatsworth in July.

He was found guilty on three charges of armed robbery and being in possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition.
