Police dog sniffs out heroin dealer’s bounty

Police dog helps find hidden drugs.

POLICE arrested a man in Clairwood on Wednesday, 6 May, after SAPS canine, Johnny sniffed out 1,100 straws of heroin he was hiding.

The covert operation by KZN Hawks, SAPS K9 Shongweni narcotics unit and Chatsworth crime intelligence began after police were tipped off about a man selling drugs at a house in Houghton Road.

The KZN Hawks searched a car belonging to a 37-year-old man and found a cigarette box with 17 empty straws, believed to be used to store and sell heroin.

K9 Shongweni narcotics unit’s Constable Musa Khwela let his canine partner, Johnny sniff the box and the dog immediately set off, following the scent. He led them to a packet lying next to the house, in which police found 1,100 straws of heroin. They also found R1,100 in cash on the man.

The Chatsworth resident was arrested and charged with possession of heroin and dealing in heroin. The work of the KZN Hawks, SAPS K9 Shongweni narcotics unit and Chatsworth crime intelligence members is applauded by Brighton Beach SAPS management.
