Lions bring winter warmth to Udobo

The jerseys were knitted by a group of 10 woman aged between 60 and 80. Some 4,000 grams of wool was used for the initiative.

CHRISTMAS came early this year for pupils at Udobo School in Montclair
This after the school received a gift of jerseys and beanies on Friday, 22 May.

Durban South Lions took on the initiative to knit 101 jerseys and beanies as part of the Centennial Service Challenge during the Lions worldwide week of service from 16 to 22 May. The aim of the challenge is to help children in need in the community.

The jerseys were knitted by a group of 10 woman aged between 60 and 80. Some 4,000 grams of wool was used for the initiative. This is the fourth year Lion Lorraine Scott (79), who started the knitting project, has knitted for Udobo School. “These children come from low-income households. This was a great idea to bring the children warmth for winter,” said Scott.

Pupils were treated with a lunch of hot dogs and cool drinks and then Santa, Ed Steytler and his helpers Wendy Steytler and Sheena Lovatt, visited the school to hand over the jerseys and beanies.
Principal of Udobo School, Anne Snyders was delighted for her pupils. “It’s heart-warming for us as a school to know that people on the outside are willing to do something like this for our school,” said Snyders.
