Jacobs armed robber shot by police

Police arrest man who tried to rob petrol station.

AN ARMED robber who opened fire on a security guard and police officers was shot and arrested in Jacobs on Tuesday, 16 June.

At about 3am, a man pointed a gun at an attendant at a petrol station on Quality Street in Jacobs, demanding he open the station’s shop.

Seeing the altercation, security guard Shaun Peters confronted the man. Peters threw a bottle at the would-be thief, who fired his gun in return. No-one was injured and while Peters was running for cover, he noticed the man jump over a wall.

The armed man went on to rob an employee in the neighbouring business, making off with an E200 Samsung mobile phone.

According to Wentworth SAPS communications officer, Lieutenant M Gumede, officers, X Ngwane and D Mkhize chased after the man through bushes next to the business. When the officers caught up with him, he pointed his gun in their direction and they fired two shots at him.

The 27-year-old was arrested with a gunshot wound to his right arm and left leg. A Norinco 9mm pistol with the serial number filed off was found on him, along with the stolen mobile phone. He was taken to King Edward VIII Hospital under police guard for treatment.
