Police save day in Pine Road screwdriver stabbing

BRIGHTON Beach police officers on patrol in Clairwood on Friday, 17 July, stopped an armed robbery and saved the life of a man who had been stabbed in the head with a screwdriver.

While on patrol at about 3pm, Warrant Officer Johan Barnard and Constable Abram Lesolle heard a man screaming for help. The duo drove towards the screaming by the Pine Road bridge and saw two men in a tussle.

One of the men had blood pouring from a wound in his forehead, while the other held a screwdriver. Despite a concerted effort by the man with the screwdriver, the police officers were able to subdue him and place him under arrest.

“God sent them,” said the 32-year-old Chatsworth man of his police rescuers. He told police he had tried to fight off his attacker, who had held the screwdriver to his throat while stealing his mobile phone.

His attacker was charged with armed robbery and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The station intends to oppose bail as the man is already out on bail for an armed robbery in Montclair earlier this year.

“Brighton Beach SAPS management commends W/O Barnard and Const Lesolle for their prompt response which prevented any further harm coming to the victim. The arrest is also commended by our management, as robberies under the Pine Road bridge remain problematic,” said Brighton Beach SAPS communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux.
