Stern caution as assault cases spike

Tit-for-tat won't fly.

BRIGHTON Beach SAPS warns residents about the serious repercussions should they be found guilty of assault and that ‘tit-for-tat’ arguments make them less responsible for their actions.

With an increase in cases of assault and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) being reported at the station, communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux has issued a stern warning.

“If convicted of assault or assault GBH, a fine, imprisonment or both may be imposed as judgement is passed by the court. Irrelevant of the sentence imposed, you will still have a criminal record,” she said.

In cases reported to the station, the perpetrators are usually known to victims and in most cases, alcohol has not been a contributing factor. Assault cases are sent to the prosecutor’s office for a decision on whether or not to prosecute.

“Tit-for-tat cases are resulting in both parties being criminally prosecuted, irrelevant of who started what first.”
