Bluff fisherman amped to throw his rod at carp classic

Affording him and his teammate, Michael Steyn, this amazing opportunity was an impressive live catch of a 13,74kg common carp at the World Carp Classic SA qualifier earlier this year in Pretoria, making them the overall winners.

BLUFF fisherman, Tyrone Leemans, 36, is counting down the weeks till he gets to show off his prime angling skills at the World Carp Classic taking place at the famous Lake Lac Madine in France in September.

Having directed his focus mainly of freshwater fishing for the last five years, Tyrone now looks forward to competing in one of the world’s biggest and most popular freshwater carp angling tournaments. He describes this milestone as a lifelong dream that has finally come true. “It’s surreal. The closer we get to the date, the more it sinks in that this is actually happening. A year ago I used to research online and go through YouTube videos to learn all about the World Carp Classic. I was fascinated by this competition and wondered how it be to one day fish in such a top league. In about six weeks time and I’ll actually be there live and in person, doing what I love surrounded by some of my role models in the sport,” he said with excitement.

Tyrone has been fishing his whole life and his mother was one of the first females in the country to get a skipper’s licence to drive a boat out at sea over 50 years ago. “Fishing has been in my family from generations before me and I have been fishing for as long as I can remember. For the last 12 years I have been fishing competitively under the KwaZulu-Natal Coast Anglers Union (KZN CAU), where I have competed in various provincial championships across the country,” said the avid fisherman.

In addition to a home filled with trophies from various fishing tournaments, Tyrone has also been selected to fish for the president’s side in Namibia, managed the U16 Natal side team in 2018 and further helped them win third overall in South Africa as a team in which two anglers received their Protea anglers blazers. He now looks forward to competing with strategy and finesse in mind at the World Carp Classic. He has found that fishing at night, having the right kind of bait and using secure carp fishing rigs are just some of the techniques that have worked in his favour before and will be implemented at the international fishing event, where he also hopes to catch a full leather carp for the first time.”One of the good carp tactics to make sure you use the strongest equipment that you can at all times,” he added.

To make the most of his upcoming carp fishing adventure, Tyrone is currently underway with his plans from organising travel logistics to ensuring he has the best equipment to guarantee he has an enjoyable and productive time in France. Tyrone and Michael appeal to the Bluff public and business for sponsorship to assist with travel expenses, equipment, food and uniform.
