School-goers should show respect [LETTER]

What has our country become when school-goers no longer respect discipline and law enforcement?

EDITOR – The CPF/ COP on the Bluff would like to respond to the letter headlined ‘We don’t feel safe at school anymore’.

The letter is from a Grosvenor Girls High School learner who seems to have a problem with SAPS and the CPF visiting the school. Brighton Beach police station works tirelessly with the Bluff CPF and as police they carry a weapon as part of their uniform.

The CPF morning group on the Bluff are all pensioners and our average age is 65. We do not carry weapons or sticks and always patrol with our local SAPS. Our dress code is yellow or blue.

We are well known on the Bluff as we support our local police officers. One of our members uses a walking stick as an aid.

The tasks of the CPF is to assist our local enforcement officers. We work from statistics and patrol and observe high crime areas.

We never visit schools without the permission of the head and always in conjunction with SAPS.

The learner who wrote the article, stated that on Wednesday, 31 July, a group of about four men in yellow shirts with COP written on them, came to the school carrying long thick sticks.

This is totally incorrect, as our group consisted of more than four people and included women and a SAPS officer. The only person carrying a stick was our member who uses a walking stick as an aid.

Grosvenor Girls High had become unruly and we were tasked by SAPS to accompany them for a visit. We were very disappointed with the lack of discipline and respect shown to the teachers and our police.

The pupils had ripped a door from its hinges, which compromised the safety of the staff. At no stage were any of the pupils threatened by the CPF or SAPS.

Our visit was purely for observational purposes. What has our country become when school-goers no longer respect discipline and law enforcement?
