ADULTHOOD inevitably awaits all children and proactive staff at Durban South Primary School gave its Grade 7 learners a peep into this essential element of adult life by hosting a careers day.
The all-girl Clairwood-based school exposed its learners to the initial processes of career planning and development.

“Having this type of day is vital in that it empowers learners with knowledge of the kind of field they wish or dream of going into someday. It is important for learners to start knowing from an early age that they will one day have to choose a career, make money and become a productive member of society,” said Grade 7 teacher, Suren Ganapathie.

As part of their evaluation, the Grade 7s were tasked with researching their intended career paths and reporting their findings as an oral assessment in class. They also had to dress career specifically. “Learners revealed the subjects needed at high school to enter their chosen career and also revealed the university requirements to go into that profession,” added Suren.
Local general practitioner, Dr Navin Sunichur, spokesperson for Netcare911, Shawn Herbst, Inspector Neville Thaver of Metro Police, Montclair SAPS spokesperson, Capt Derrick Vijam and Montlands librarian, Lionel Reddy attended the event, where they all addressed learners and answered questions about their careers.
