Wentworth teen nabbed for robbery

The suspect was apprehended in Merebank Shopping Centre in possession of the complainant's Huawei cellphone.

A WENTWORTH teen, aged 15, was arrested for robbery of a cellphone on Tuesday, 24 September, in the Merebank area.

According to Wentworth police spokesperson, Captain Mbuso Gumede, the 30-years-old complainant was at the corner of Himalaya and Tomango Road waiting for a taxi when she took out a cellphone from her bag in order to check the time.
“While waiting she noticed two men walking towards her before one male grabbed her cellphone and ran away with his partner hot on his heels.
“The complainant gave chase, but the two ran away and disappeared. At the time of the incident, an off duty officer driving passed in his private vehicle gave chase. Has assisted by backup members patrolling the area,” he said.
The suspect was apprehended in Merebank Shopping Centre in possession of the complainant’s Huawei cellphone. The cellphone was handed back to the complainant and the suspect was detained at the Wentworth police station holding cells for common robbery. The accused appeared in Durban Court on Wednesday 25 September.
The off-duty police officer and Vispol Unit members were commended for effecting the arrest and recovery of the robbed complainant’s cellphone.
