TO CARE for those who once cared for us is one of the greatest honours.
This was the heed to call on all South Africans to honour their elders with solutions to the challenge of caring for elders within their communities, by the Association for the Aged (Tafta) for International Day of Older Persons on Tuesday, 1 October.

This year, Tafta commemorated the international day with a week-long series of activities at various homes, kicking off with their annual sports day held on Wednesday, 2 October. The Tafta Primrose Centre in Wentworth chose to extend heritage festivities by ushering the day in vibrant Bollywood style by hosting a Bollywood themed social event. The seniors enjoyed a fun-filled day of Indian inspired music and dance together.

“With almost 700 million people in the world over the age of 60, which is expected to grow to over two billion by 2050, now is the time to act to implement changes in how we address challenges of aged care in communities. What we do now will determine whether our elders will face a future of hardship and strife, or a future of opportunity, growth, and meaning,” explained Tafta CEO, Femada Shamam.

According to Shamam, the 2019 International Day of Older Persons theme of ‘The Journey to Age Equality’ should guide us to seek the means to explore societal and structural changes to aid the development of an age-friendly society. “Older people can make an essential contribution to the functioning of society if adequate measures are in place to harness their life experiences and the rich heritage they have so significantly established for the success of future generations,” Shamam added.
