Trees wrapped in pink to spread hope

The Bluff, Merebank and Wentworth cancer support group raised R2 200 through this initiative.

OCTOBER is Breast Cancer Awareness month which would explain why you would have seen trees wrapped in pink all around the Bluff, Merebank, and Wentworth.  In its efforts to increase breast cancer awareness, the Bluff, Merebank and Wentworth cancer support group used 104m of the Pink Trees for Pauline material to wrap the trees.

“We raised an amount of R2 200 in this initiative. We hope to inspire the community, caregivers, and survivors to purchase material and wrap trees in their gardens, places of worship and places of employment. The funds are used by Cansa to provide service delivery which entails cancer care and support to cancer patients. By working together, ‘we can-cer-vive together’,” said group coordinator, Nola Nirghin.

Pink Trees for Pauline in a non-profit company founded in Graaff-Reinet in 2012 by Carol-Ann van Jaarsveldt, who lost both her mother and grandmother, both named Pauline, to cancer. Carol-Ann’s vision was to carry the legacy of both women who were instrumental in her life by spreading hope, encouragement and belonging to others who know of or are connected to a ‘Pauline’. The company perceives the colour pink as an expression of new life and through this project, new life becomes a possibility.
