50 Year membership honored at Yellowwood Park Women’s Institute
The Christmas party date has been set for Sunday, 8 December, and will be a bring and braai.

The monthly meeting of the Yellowwood Park Evening Women’s Institute was opened by president, Sharon Quail, who welcomed all members present and their guest, Sally-Anne Goodwin.
Thoughts and prayers went out to all members who were not present. It was decided that every second month, the prayer would be read out in Afrikaans by one of our Afrikaans speaking members. After the acceptance of the minutes and the correspondence was read out, Sharon welcomed the treasurer, Wendy Henderson, back from her overseas trip and thanked Jean Ball for keeping the books in order for the past three months.
Wendy read out the financial report and this was accepted by the meeting. Sharon thanked Wendy for being the delegate at congress and Angie Michel for judging the adult competition at congress.
Angela Peters’, who was the scribe for many years, memorial service was well attended by the members and Sharon thanked all who provided eats or served tea at the service.
Vanessa Wilesmith has kindly agreed to be the scribe for the Southlands Sun but, they still need a scribe for the FWI news. October is the institute’s charity month and members were asked to bring items for Umduduzi-Hospice care for children, such as toiletries, books, toys, crayons and coloring books, bed socks and beanies.
YWP WI will host its much anticipated quiz evening on Monday, 25 November, thus meaning October is the last lot of competitions for the year.
The Christmas party date has been set for Sunday, 8 December, and will be a bring and braai. The federation of women’s institutes project for congress 2020 is to supply material carrier bags to rural children in Zululand. Members are encouraged to participate by making or buying a bag.
Members wanting badges are asked to contact Wendy Henderson. Sharon thanked Sean Quail, Rob Philogene, Derrick Wilesmith, Cliffy Waldek and Elsa Meredith for doing hopper duty with the TAFTA meals on wheels monthly programme.
Duties for October are; tea – Jan Kirk, Deleen Loker and Maria McDonald, this and that table – Gerda Viljoen, Marietjie Jansen van Rensburg and Marsha Hart. Members were reminded to bring items for the mega this and that table in November. All funds raised from this helps to keep their subs subsidized. Vanessa handed out birthday presents to the October birthday members, Robyn Murray, Deleen Loker and Wendy Henderson. She also asked members to continue putting their coins in percy, as this money will continue to assist the elderly at Evelyn House.
Raffles were drawn and presented to the winners. After all the business of the meeting had been concluded, Sharon asked Joan Prenger and Sally-Anne Goodwin to say some words about Wendy, who joined Yellowwood Park Evening Women’s Institute on 29 September 1969, thus serving 50 years of membership.
Wendy is a valued member of the YWP WI, she has served on the committee, been president (more than once) and is currently the treasurer. For many years, she was the institute’s teller when doing Botanic Gardens duty and was also a hopper for meals on wheels.
Vanessa pinned on her 50 year badge and Marsha pinned on her honorary life membership badge. Robyn Murray made a cake which Wendy cut and this was enjoyed during teatime. This was truly a momentous occasion for Wendy. The meeting ended with the prayer, and then tea and eats were enjoyed by all present.
