One cup unites a nation

I got a chance to see the Boks in Durban on Friday, 8 November. Here's my account of it...

THE MOOD is ecstatic – people are wide-eyed and extremely excited.

I hear cheers and screams as I near the vicinity. It is packed. I’m here before the Boks, I’m so relieved. As I weave my way through the throngs, I realise how my height might betray me.

I walk about, looking for higher ground, but all the places are occupied. I settle on standing on the steps, worried that I might not get the shot because I could not see anything on the stage.

My frustration clears when I realise that there’s another stage above the one being performed on. I’m standing on the best spot there is, I think to myself.

I take a few practice shots and I’m happy with what they look like.

I’m now just as thrilled and excited as everybody else at the City Hall in Durban if it wasn’t for my reserved nature, I probably would be screaming from the top of my lungs right now as well.

I see an interracial couple holding hands, I see people of all races grouping together to take selfies and then it hits me; unity looks good on us as a nation. I get goosebumps!

The Boks finally arrive and I’m taken aback for a minute. These guys, among us, look like giants with their muscular bodies and heads held high. And just before they alight their tour bus, they raise the trophy cup and the crowd goes ballistic.

Friday, 8 November, is a dull day as such; the cup looks like it captured all the sunlight, what a spectacle it was.
It’s a beautiful day in Durban. The gloomy weather didn’t deter the spectators to assemble in masses to see the Boks with the shiny new trophy.

Dear Springboks, thank you for reminding us of how unity looks so good on us. And congratulations, we needed this win to remind us that we’re #StrongerTogether!
