THE spate of crimes and other social ills in Wentworth inspired the community to get together for the greater good.
To show their desperation for change, congregants and residents joined forces and marched the streets in solidarity on Saturday, 9 November, despite the foggy-light-showered weather. The march that started from Silvertree Road and ended at the park on Hime Street, saw churches of no particular fellowship from the area group to discuss ways of bringing a change in the community.
One of the organisers, David Usher, said they felt it a great need to show a stand of solidarity as a church of Wentworth. “With all the crime over the recent months in our community, there’s been a desire to see a change, but a lot of things were being done in pockets – people were doing things on their individual strengths. It was necessary for us to show a united front as ministers outside of our denominations and different fellowships,” he said.
He said that by doing things this way, it united them against all the injustices that are being suffered in the community against crime and drugs. “We are also willing to work with the community and the police as the church because our stand is for righteousness and justice but first we have to stand together against the injustices and unrighteousness. Therefore, on this occasion, we’d want to stand together in a show of solidarity and unity and our desire is that we see peace in our community,” he said.
The march was well-supported by the community and the local police branch was given a special prayer for their protection as they carry out their duties.
“A lot of people were looking forward to the march and on the day, even though the weather was not permitting, they decided that they wanted to continue with the march. They wanted to make a statement that emits whatever seems to be standing in our way, we’re going to push through and in doing so, the unity and the desire that people showed to brave the weather to make a statement says so much about our community wanting to see change,” David added.
