Police give tips to curb property-related crimes

Captain Louise le Roux and Constable Simphiwe Gama, patrolled the Hillside Mall and the Bluff Towers Mall on foot, to give away 2 000 informative flyers.

PROPERTY-RELATED crimes remain a stubborn problem within the Brighton Beach policing area, this is according to the local police’s corporate communications officer Captain Louise le Roux.

“Housebreaking incidents are the largest contributing crime followed by vehicle-related crimes, these include theft of, from and out of motor vehicle, including theft from trucks,” she said.

To combat housebreaking from occurring throughout the day and night within the Bluff and Clairwood areas, Brighton Beach police distributed flyers with the intention to create awareness among homeowners, tenants and vehicle owners to safeguard their valuables. On Friday, 25 October, Le Roux and Constable Simphiwe Gama, patrolled the Hillside Mall and the Bluff Towers Mall on foot, to give away 2 000 informative flyers.

Key points on the distributed flyers included:
•Ensure that your house number is clearly visible. This helps with prompt response in cases of emergency by SAPS and your security provider.
•Know all emergency numbers. Place a list of emergency numbers around the house, especially the bathroom, as generally, perpetrators lock victims away here.
The placement of a panic alarm button here is also recommended.
•Arrange for post box mail collection if you’re going away for long periods.
•A watchdog and small dogs are a good alarm system. Let your dogs roam the property at night.
•Ensure that your house has sufficient lighting, especially at night.
•Request a remote panic button from your security company. These are handy to keep in your handbag or key ring.
•When entering or exiting your premises be alert and vigilant at all times.
•Change departure and arrival times and routes as criminals monitor movements of their targets.
•Keep record of the serial numbers of electrical goods.
•Mentor your domestic worker and gardener not to reveal information on departure and arrival times to any person making enquiries.
•Should you fall prey to a house robbery, comply with your assailant’s instructions
