Artist challenges ill perception of Wentworth through music

After heeding to his music calling, he began roping in local talent from his area. This was in keeping with his goal to use his talent to change perceptions.

DALE Dalinho Parkins also known as Sir Linho has his sights set on taking the music scene by storm and is already making waves on social media.

His latest offering I Know You Lu’mme (Love Me) is gaining traction with more than 3 000 views on YouTube. After four years in the music industry, the 29-year-old Wentworth local says he feels it is his time and this time, not even the sky is the limit.

“My mixtape in the works is called Linho Season. I think it is my time now, so that’s where the name comes from. I believe I am at the age where I have a good head on my shoulders, obviously, the cameras will be there but I’m not after that. I just love music. I love the process and the beats,” he enthused.

After heeding to his music calling, he began roping in local talent from his area. This was in keeping with his goal to use his talent to change perceptions.

“We’ve been told so many times nothing good comes from Wentworth, there’s nothing nice about this place, only deaths, and gangsterism.

“So, I want to change the narrative of how people look at this place. I want people to acknowledge the social ills like poverty and the fights but there’s talent as well and it’s not only in music.

“There is so much talent here that I feel it just needs to be unearthed. I also want the visuals to make Durban – or where we are from in Durban – look amazing. And people from the area ask me where the video was shot and I tell them Ansteys Beach, our beach that we’ve been going to it since we were children,” he said.

I Know You Lu’mme is a cute tale about a boy who has his heart set on a girl who is playing hard to get, yet is just as smitten. Sir Linho comes in with his smooth lyrics to this laid back beat and tries to woo a girl, played by Allyssa Bowes, by convincing her that he is an all-round who is better than the other guy.

“We dropped the single in November last year and got mad love for it. It was more than we anticipated, which is good, it can still be more as it’s always growing.”

It was not always smooth sailing for Sir Linho as he has seen some extreme lows in his career but keeping God in the centre of everything for him has kept him going. As he rises to stardom, his words of advice to upcoming artists is to persevere as tough times never last.

“There have been so many times where I put out content and wished that the numbers were better. And if I had stopped then, I wouldn’t be where I am now.”

“If you’re going to be disheartened by the numbers of your content, then you’re doing this for the wrong reasons. You’ve got to love this, the music, the videos, making it.”

“Be hungry for it, ask questions. If you’re doing music, make sure that you are serious about it and keep God at the centre of everything. If it wasn’t for Him, I wouldn’t have so much faith in this. Music is such a powerful thing that you can be happy, listen to a sad song and feel sad, and vice versa.”

Not even the sky is the limit for Sir Linho. His latest mixtape will be available soon. Follow him on his social media pages on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and watch this local take over the music and creative industry.
