VIDEO: Local comedian’s lockdown humour will have you in stitches
"Travel restrictions are another challenge. I know everybody is feeling it, hence, I decided to entertain people online and give them something to smile and laugh about during such a difficult time.” - Andrew Hughes.
“Hi, my name is Andrew and I’m handsome,” is how local funny man, Andrew Hughes, introduces himself to a stranger.
The Ixopo-born 35-year-old, who now resides in Wentworth, said the love for entertainment and the ability to make people laugh is a trait of his from childhood.
He is gradually making a name for himself in comedy scenes and his most popular gigs are the hilarious phone conversation styled skits he posts on social media.
He draws inspiration from his personal experiences and the happenings of his surroundings.
“So, whenever you see me, just know that I’m watching you like a hawk,” he joked.
“I feel very honoured and appreciated just knowing that even though my storytelling is very coloured, it is relatable to people of all racial backgrounds.
“People love and enjoy what I do.”

Like an artist true to his craft, Andrew doesn’t have a rhythm or specific days set for providing his thigh-slapping comedy, he simply relies on inspiration to produce his authentic punch lines that his fans have come to enjoy.
With the likes of Kevin Hart, Steve Harvey, Carvin Goldstone and Trevor Noah, as his role models, Andrew, a sales consultant by trade, hopes to reach as far as the stars with his comedy.
He said that like other industries, the consequence of the lockdown on the entertainment industry has shaken their livelihood.
“It has really affected the entertainment sector negatively as the work we do requires crowded gatherings, which is a no-no with this pandemic.”
“Travel restrictions are another challenge. I know everybody is feeling it, hence, I decided to entertain people online and give them something to smile and laugh about during such a difficult time.”
“Never forget that you are special and unique in your own way.”
“Life is also very short, live your life doing what makes you happy.
“I ask that we stand together and work together as a nation and soon this will all be one bad storm that has passed,” he said.
