Trio fitness instructors set to dominate HIIT movement locally

The group trains regularly and run classes for the public at the Blue Roof Life Space in Wentworth.

MEMBERS of the Dominate Fitness Club were instrumental in making life during lockdown a bit easier for others. The team of three from Wentworth used social media platforms to keep fit while extending a lifeline to others. They posted fitness videos regularly to keep at their momentum.

“We had a lockdown series where we had the workouts and lockdown fitness challenges. These challenges were to specific theme songs such as the Cha-Cha SlideUpTown Funk, and the Macarena. People were very open to our project,” said Marvin Pretorius.

The idea was initially to post a video each day of the initial 21-day lockdown, the group said. The videos were live-streamed on Instagram and Facebook, with an average of 20 to 30 people at a time tuned in on both platforms.

The group use high-intensity interval training (HIIT), also called sprint interval training. It is a form of interval training, a cardiovascular exercise strategy alternating short periods of intense anaerobic exercise with less-intense recovery periods.

“The fitness challenges had a major reach. We even reached people overseas. Our one video peaked at over a million views. There were people from as far as California who did the challenge and a lot more people from Cape Town.”

“The reception was way more than we expected when we started. We thought we were just doing it for ourselves but not realising how many people needed it at the time. It soon became more about them than us,” said Marlon Pretorius.

The group acknowledged the social ills in the area they are from and said they consider sports as their saving grace. They train regularly and run classes for the public at the Blue Roof Life Space in Wentworth.

“Our mindset sets us apart. We have different ways of looking at life. It’s also part of being from a sports background, we’ve played soccer for years together.”

“We have the same wavelength of thinking. We’re also not selfish because by doing these fitness classes is not only for our own gain. We think that if we can reach five people to change their lives for the better, it is a benefit for us too,” Declynn Johns said.

The Dominate Fitness Club calls on residents to try out their HIIT training classes at Blue Roof Life Space in Wentworth. Classes are on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. For more information, like their Facebook page.
