Youth bounce back into sport with basketball fun
PeacePlayers SA in partnership with the Department of Sport and the Recreation and Sport for Social Change Network (SSCN), hosted a 12-hours nonstop virtual physical activity event for the communities of Durban South.

SLAM dunks and bank shots were the order of the day at the fun filled PeacePlayers SA virtual sporting event as part of National Recreation Day on Friday, 2 October.
PeacePlayers SA in partnership with the Department of Sport and the Recreation and Sport for Social Change Network (SSCN), hosted a 12-hours nonstop virtual physical activity event for the communities of Durban South.

Originally, planned to take place in uMlazi, inclement weather resulted in alternative venue arrangements to move the event to Blue Roof Life Space in Wentworth at the last minute. The event was also be streamed live on PeacePlayers’ Facebook page and was held under Covid-19 restrictions.
Youth engaged in a number of activities with basketball being the main focus sport. The event was led and orchestrated by uMlazi area manager for PeacePlayers, Thobani Ngubane. The host and guest speaker on the day was award winning comedian, Nonto Rubushe, who participated in the activities and ended the day with a motivational speech to the participants.

“SSCN provided us the opportunity to be part of the National Recreational Day marathon initiative. I had the opportunity to lead the challenging, yet exciting event which helped us all learn and grow as a team. Despite the rain interference, the youth had so much fun from the practices to the main event of the day. One child even asked when we would be hosting such an event again. This showed how much the youth enjoyed being in the field again to participate in sport after a long four months of lockdown. I’d like to thank SSCN for this great opportunity and I look forward to partnerships that assist us to conduct these types of events,” said Ngubani.
