WATCH: Dilapidated school needs urgent fix
Described as the pride of the township, it is today dilapidated as a result of the 2017 storms and poor or irregular maintenance.
WENTWORTH Secondary School is in a dire need of a face-lift.
Described as the pride of the township, it is today dilapidated as a result of the 2017 storms and poor or irregular maintenance. The school appeals to former learners, educators, governing bodies, community members and companies for sponsorship to assist wherever possible to return it to its former glory.
Principal Laurel Cook said, although the school in its entirety needed to get fixed, the priority area is the hall for its multipurpose function. She said a lot of work had to be put in to ensure classes were divided to meet Covid-19 regulations.
“When learners come in the morning, they spend at least 20 minutes looking for their classrooms. When the register is taken, they are moved around to their specific classes. This happens while they’re supposed to be sitting, praying, ready and focused for their first lesson. Whereas if we had a hall, everybody goes to the same chair every day and schooling can carry on,” she said.
The call has also been echoed on social media to spread the reach far and wide. Member of the community, William R Goldstone, made the call on Facebook, calling the school a treasured community asset.
“I was on a brief tour of the facility recently. What I found most amazing is that the staff and learners of the school keep on going despite what the physical environment presents. Learning continues despite the fact that the top floor of the entire block, including the science laboratory, generously sponsored by SAPREF, cannot be used for fear of a potential accident (in the event of the roof collapsing) given that it is heavily compromised since the storm.”
“The top unused space accounts for at least 35 per cent of the floor area which, under normal circumstances, would be used for teaching. As a result, congestion during exams is a regular occurrence,” he said.
Cook thanked the residents who have rallied behind the school’s restoration and their ongoing support.
“I always say God’s timing is perfect and I stand on that word. Even when this year started, I said I believe in my spirit that it is the season for Wentworth Secondary School.”
“I see the change, growth and development as we’re moving. The seeds are sprouting and I am grateful to all the people behind the scenes. I too have been working behind the scenes for years. And it is good to put in the work because we are not here for self-glory. We give God the glory,” she added.
The school is situated at 94 Olive Grove, Jacobs. For more information, call 031-468-2039.
