Five nabbed after attempted Merebank robbery

The PT Alarms Control Centre received a complaint from a Merebank Ridge resident reporting two men who attempted to steal items from his yard.

FIVE suspects were arrested and an assortment of weapons were recovered after PT Alarms Tactical K9 unit members intercepted a reported suspicious vehicle on Travancore Drive near Mondi in Merebank  on Wednesday, 11 November.

The PT Alarms Control Centre received a complaint from a Merebank Ridge resident reporting two men who attempted to steal items from his yard but were disturbed and proceeded towards Warangal Road.

PT Alarms Response and Tactical units were immediately dispatched. “Residents reported a white BMW with occupants loitering in the area. A search was conducted and PT Tactical K9 Unit intercepted the vehicle. Back up was summoned upon spotting the vehicle and all available PT Tactical and Response Units dashed to the scene. Police were alerted and Wentworth SAPS and Umlazi K9 arrived quickly on scene,” said spokesman of PT Alarms, Dhevan Govindasamy.

“Five occupants in the vehicle were apprehended by the PT Tactical Officers. Various weapons were seized. Police took custody of the suspects. Investigations are underway,” added Govindasamy.

Wentworth police communications officer Captain Mbuso Gumede confirmed that the suspects, aged 27 and 31, were detained for the possession of an unlicensed firearm, illegal possession of ammunition and possession of dangerous weapons.

“The firearm will be sent to ballistics to establish if it was used in the commission of other crimes. The security officers of PT alarms are commended for attending to the complainant swiftly and ensuring that criminals were caught,” said Gumede.

Residents of Merebank Ridge are commended for being alert and quickly reporting the attempted crime and suspicious vehicle and people which resulted in the apprehension of the suspects.
