Police appeal to public to assist in identifying body found at Cuttings Beach

A decapitated body was found on Cuttings Beach, Merebank on Thursday morning, 12 November.

A DECOMPOSED, decapitated body was found on Cuttings Beach, Merebank on Thursday morning, 12 November.

Proficient Tactical Security members were the first on scene when they made the shocking discovery of deceased woman’s body. In a graphic video posted on Facebook, members are seen hauling the decomposed body among washed up debris on shore.

Wentworth police were alerted and called for assistance from Durban SAPS Search and Rescue as well as Metro Police Search and Rescue teams. “The severely decomposed corpse was recovered which had no feet, no hands and no head. The search and rescue team then handed over the corpse to the members of Wentworth SAPS. The corpse was taken to Pinetown Government Mortuary. An inquest docket is being investigated by detectives,” said Wentworth police spokesperson, Captain Mbuso Gumede.

“We had received a dispatch from one of the other officers who suspected that there was a body near the beach. We arrived at the scene at around 10am and saw the body near the water. The waves were pulling it into the ocean. We took the initiative to bring it back to shore because we worried it would be wash away by the time the police arrived,” said Allistair Barclay who was one of the members on site at the scene.

Anyone who could assist the police in identifying the deceased is to contact investigating officer Warrant Officer Thompson on 031- 451-6214.
