VIDEO: Activism group calls for embroiled political leaders to be held accountable

A placard demonstration was held at the corner of Grays Inn and Tara roadson the Bluff.

UNIMPRESSED by the former president Jacob Zuma’s latest actions by absconding the Zondo Commission, residents took to the street to express their dissatisfaction.

Members of the Active Citizens Movement (ACM) vented their frustrations on Friday afternoon, 20 November with a placard demonstration at the corner of Grays Inn and Tara roads.

The group called for Zuma, his co-accused and the other politicians who are involved to account for their actions and pay the state back what was taken unlawfully.

The demonstration called for motorists to show their support by hooting as they drove by.

Media and exco member of ACM, Ashok Chandika, said those responsible for the looting of Covid funds and state capture must be brought to book.

He said the movement’s purpose is to get those people responsible for fraud, theft and looting to be prosecuted and sentenced.

“That is the first part of our campaign and it seems to be going well. We are building up to the peak at the start of December where on the first Friday, we hope to have a big centralised campaign as well as activity on International Anti-Corruption Day on Wednesday, 9 December,” he said.

“ACM is deeply disturbed and disgusted to note the behaviour, actions and attitude of former President Zuma as well as his attorney, Advocate (Muzi) Sikhakhane in showing extreme disrespect and impotence at the Zondo Commission.”

“We stand firmly behind Deputy Chief Justice (Raymond) Zondo and we support the work of the commission. We believe that former president Zuma is central to the state capture project and he must account to it for the people of South Africa,” he said.

ACM is rooted in the ethical culture of doing the right thing. It follows a simple five-step guide that includes having accountability from within, seeing, reporting, and stopping wrongdoing for a corruption-free society.
