Firearm amnesty period still applicable

Residents have less than two months left to legally dispose of their unwanted firearms.

THE Minister of police, General Bheki Cele, issued a new firearm amnesty for a period of six months, commencing from 1 August to 31 January 2021.

This period allows the community to surrender illegal or unwanted firearms, ammunition and or firearm parts to help clear illegal guns from the streets.

The station commander of SAPS Montclair, Colonel Trevor Bradley Small, is encouraging the community to take this opportunity offered by the police to surrender firearms at your nearest police station.

This amnesty encourages the safekeeping of firearms in communities and to prevent the loss or theft of firearms. The owners of firearms are obligated to abide by the Firearm Controls Act, 2000 (Act 60 of 2000) and the South African Police Service prescripts that guide firearm owners on the use and handling of firearms.

The owners of firearms who are interested in handing over the firearm to the police must take heed of the following process:

Hand the firearm in at a community service centre or to a designated amnesty official with documentary proof. The designated amnesty official at the police station will then complete a form which is in triplicate and hand a copy to the owner.

Contact the following numbers during office hours, Monday to Friday from 8am to 3pm at these local SAPS stations to make an appointment should you wish to hand in your firearm :
