Tara Road sidewalk installation in the spotlight [LETTER]

At the end of the day the community loses out on work and contracting opportunities.

EDITOR – I really believe the public needs to know the facts so they can form their own opinion of the events.

There are always conversations that happen in private or behind closed doors. Certain individuals masquerade or put on a show that they are acting in the interest of the community when these individuals would much prefer for you (the public) to not know what transpires out of these conversations. Your ignorance is their power.

The sidewalk installation on Tara Road was a municipality project that falls part of roads provision. According to the municipality this was tendered out as a ward 66 project. The conditions of contract were a contractor participation goal (CPG) of 20 per cent and a local labour coverage of 50 per cent of the workforce.

What that means is that the contractors appointed to complete the work were obligated to have at least 20 per cent of the works done by local contractors from our community and half the workforce coming from our community. A company by the name of Tyger Civils was awarded work as part of the local portion of the job. Tyger Civils did not employ any labor from ward 66.

My question is why was a company not from our community (ward 66) but from Umzinto, appointed as a local sub contractor?

My second question – why were there only three local labour on the entire project when the total labour force headcount amounted to over 34 people? Our public representatives have been informed about matters like these several times and have done nothing about it.

Public officials responsible for the work look the other way or refrain from getting involved. At the end of the day the community loses out on work and contracting opportunities.
