Coach introduces fitness programme to inspire active culture among children

The initiative was started towards the end of last year with the aim of creating healthier lifestyles for children.

IF you’ve been trying to get your children off the couch and more active, then consider yourself lucky. Fitness instructor, Philemon Dhliwayo, plans on offering this service free of charge to children at primary school level.

The initiative was started towards the end of last year with the aim of creating healthier lifestyles for children.

“When we started Kids in Motion towards the end of 2020, the intention was to promote a culture of exercising among kids especially those at primary school level.  It, therefore, is my intention to use my spare time and conduct sessions at primary schools in the Montclair and Yellowwood areas free of charge.”

“Child obesity is a challenge and l hope this will help some child somewhere. To me, it will be payback to the residents of the area for their support over the years particularly in 2020,” said the Montclair-based fitness enthusiast.

His motto this year is #OutofOurComfortZones, which, according to coach Phil, as he is affectionately known, is intended to push members to aim for higher levels of fitness.

“This is irrespective of the current challenge of Covid-19. I also intend to enroll for a short course on nutrition to enable me to help members on issues of healthy nutrition.”

As the trajectory of Covid-19 statistics is on the rise, he said he is concerned about a possible ban on outdoor activities. His advice to fellow athletes is to adopt the home-based exercising option as the new normal. “Playing and doing exercises as families by creating a routine of activities that can be done indoors or outdoors within one’s premises. Remember, sports will always be there after this phase. The only thing that can help us flatten the curve is discipline. And this starts at an individual level which will translate to community discipline.”

“Besides adherence to the Covid-19 protocols before, during, and post-infection, we must as much as possible, avoid crowded public places and minimise physical interaction with people other than family members we reside with in the same house. Exercising and a healthy diet regimen can help mitigate the severity of Covid-19, if infected,” he said.

Coach Phil added that a ban on outdoor activities was not a far fetched thought and is currently exploring the option of an online platform in an effort to keep group members motivated.

Further information about Kids in Motion and #OutofOurComfortZones will be published on the SUN once all have been finalised. To get in touch, call coach Phil on 084-476-2299.
